There are many reasons that school officials like the idea of school uniforms. Principals and teachers point out the fact that uniforms diminish competition between students and allow students to think about what is really important during the school day. School uniforms also put every student on an even playing field – you are known for whom you are, not what you wear.Kids and parents seem to have just as many reasons to protest school uniform policies. Parents and their children claim that uniforms take away their individuality. Many parents feel they are not cost effective and some students just don’t find them comfortable.
A new trend in school uniforms is allowing school administrators to address these concerns over school uniforms and give their students great new uniform choices. What is this new trend that is acceptable all around? T-shirts, says Grundy High School Principal.
“We had a lot of unhappy people last year when we first began requiring school uniforms. During the spring semester we met with a panel of students, parents, and teachers and came up with a list of acceptable alternatives,” says Principal Gilliam.
The idea that won the day, says Gilliam, was the t-shirt. He and the panel felt that by giving students the option of wearing a comfortable, cotton t-shirt with their uniform slacks they would be more accepting of the policy. “We also are introducing color options to our uniforms this year. Students can choose from 5 different colored shirts, all with our logo,” Gilliam explained.
Gilliam and his advisory panel worked closely with a promotional clothing company to find affordable and well made cotton printed t-shirts that were comfortable. To keep costs low the school logo will be silkscreened onto the t-shirt, not embroidered like last year’s polo shirts and oxfords.Z
So far, the new uniform policy seems to have the support of the students and parents at Gilliam’s school. Pre-sales of t-shirts, which were being sold the last 2 weeks of school in the school book store, went well. The t-shirts will be available through the summer and into the fall.
