What has the world come to…again? Throughout fashion history men’s corsets have periodically popped up because men care as much about their figures as women! Male corsets were most popular in the 18th century among the aristocrats and they came back into style in the early 20th century. The corsets slim a man’s figure so the physique better fits clothing such as narrow suits.Of course, people today are usually more interested in comfort when it’s time to go to work. Who wants to wear a corset under their promotional clothing? Work uniforms need to fit well, be durable and remain suitable for a lot of activity. But corsets for men are re-appearing in fashion in a new form. The new body fitting materials have led to the design of men’s “shapewear” which sounds so much better than “girdle”. Underwear designed to improve the shape of the body is appearing on store shelves.
For example, the Australian brand Equmen has designed men’s underwear that will hold in the gut while also assisting posture. It’s a tight fitting shirt made of polyester, spandex, and nylon. They have proven to be extremely popular at Saks Fifth Avenel.
The creation of compression fabrics for athletes has made the new men’s underwear possible. Stylish looking undershirts and briefs include compression panels that reshape the body when worn.
You need practical underwear to wear under your work uniforms, but when it’s time to impress the women it seems men want a little help looking good. Some of the shirts are made to look like traditional undershirts so there’s no embarrassment in the locker room. Many men may want corsets again, but it seems they don’t anyone to know they are wearing them!
Corsets for men are back but with new styling. It just proves that fashion really does get recycled over and over again.
