School Uniforms and the Fashionistas

School uniforms have finally pleased the fashionistas! With the addition of simple, cotton tee shirts to the basic school uniform the ensemble has become chic and an inspiration for designers.

Traditionally, school uniforms were worn with oxford shirts and the most talked about styling option was ‘with’ or ‘without’ a tab. With the introduction of tee shirts comfort and fashion are now on the forefront. What is so different about a tee shirt?

The cotton tee shirt allows students to relax. They are no longer required to button up and have a tie on at all times. This is reason enough to enjoy the tee but students have found many more reasons. Foremost is the ease with which a tee shirt can be accessorized. School uniforms do not allow for much deviation from the norm but creative students have come up with ingenious ways to make their tee shirts stand out in the crowd.

Some of our favorites include the ‘rhinestone necklace’ which consists of tiny micro rhinestones glued in a thin line around the collar of the tee and an embellished school emblem. To add accents to a school emblem a student can hot glue gems and rhinestones over the logo in the appropriate colors or they can outline letters with the gemstones for the same effect.

Teachers and administrative staff have not come down hard on students for making these small changes. “It is no different from the girls who wear work boots with their uniform skirts or the guys who were required to wear a coat and tie at all times and did so in the spring with a pair of shorts,” states Gordon Kelsey, head of an exclusive boarding school.

It is Kelsey’s opinion that small changes to the school uniforms are okay when they are not offensive and allow creativity. Limits must be set and he and his fellow teachers have put a plan in place dictating what can be done to school uniforms and the classic tee shirt.
