Buying habits are changing across the country. Small downtowns no longer exist. Malls are even passé in some areas. Outdoor strip malls anchored by a megastore are where people head to shop. There are many reasons for these changes, with money ranking number one. Mega stores have the ability to price items at a discount. A big superstore can buy toilet paper in bulk and sell it at a very low price point. A mom and pop grocery store does not have the room to buy toilet paper in bulk and has to sell the same item at a higher price point.
However, just because a megastore can sell at a lower price does not mean they will. Many times a big store will draw customers in with low price household items and keep other goods at regular prices.
Several megastores now offer school uniforms at the beginning of the school year. There are several problems with this set up – especially the price. Because the school uniform is sold in a discount store parents will have the impression it is cheaper than uniforms offered elsewhere. This may or may not be true. However, parents must remember – they get what they pay for.
Quality control gets lost in shuffle when school uniforms enter the megastore framework. They are looking for a cheap product to sell at a low price point to beat the competition. To do this they will offer the basics such as pants, shirts, and skirts, in one lower-end fabric.
What do parents get from school uniform suppliers? Schools and promotional clothing distributers work to develop a comfortable a durable school uniform. It represents the school, stands up to many types of washing, and feels great the first time it is worn. The school logo is prominently featured on the uniform to encourage school pride and identity.
Parents may be concerned that a high-quality fabric choice and a better all around product will raise the price of the school uniform. It may. On the other hand, it may not. Remember that megastores are in the business to make money. They draw customers in with a deal but sell many items at normal prices.
When asked, most parents would choose a high –quality product over a low-end school uniform for their child. The durability makes the uniform worth a few extra dollars.
