Why School Uniforms?

The debate over school uniforms rages on. Parents, teachers, administrators, and students have difficulty coming to terms with the decision to implement school uniforms in public schools across the country. Some are big supporters of the uniform while others see it as a big mistake.

No matter which side of the issue you find yourself on it is important to look at all the different aspects of the school uniform puzzle. Studies show time and again that schools who implement a school uniform policy immediately have an improvement in grades and fewer discipline referrals. These same schools see fewer cliques on campus and less bullying.

Detractors of the school uniform point to the loss of individuality. They fear students will lose their individuality and become a part of the masses when required to wear a uniform. However, the opposite is true. According to Sandy Gann of RG Promotions many students spend so much time attempting to look their best or fit in they forget who they are. Taking way this element and putting students in uniforms places everyone on an even playing field. This requires students to use something besides their clothing and their looks to get ahead in school.

The great thing about the new school uniforms is comfort. School uniforms are now easy to care for and trendy with the addition of high quality t-shirts and polo shirts branded with the school logo. School uniforms in the public school sector focus on wearability and cost efficiency. The cost of the entire uniform kit, including the t-shirt, pants, and accessories, is much less than the typical uniform kit from five years ago.

Sandy Gann reports that sees big changes in both students and parents once uniform policies are in place and students start to wear their school t-shirts. “A new school culture is formed and massive changes happen. This is when grades improve and behavior gets better,” says Gann. And, this is when the parents get on board!
