The kids are back in school and if you are like most parents, the expense is just really starting. You bought some school supplies and new printed t-shirts with the school name or logo. The book bag has the newest colours and the shoes are polished. You would think that you had spent enough considering your children go to public schools that are supposed to be supported with tax dollars. But instead, mother and dad must now buy sports uniforms and equipment, pay special fees for class trips, buy costumes for the holiday skits and probably buy even more school supplies.School has gotten expensive any way you look at it. If you’re like most parents, the cost of the school uniforms is a drop in the bucket compared to the total amount spent to keep your children in school and fully participating in activities. The recession has made it even more difficult on household budgets because so many people are unemployed or underemployed right now. What are parents to do?
One of the first things they can do is establish a budget for school expenses. That means you need to list all the likely expenses and then budget the maximum amount you have to spend. The next step is to look for ways you can save money. For example, you can shop online for school clothes and find incredible bargains. Shopping carefully is actually the key to successful budgeting. If you get in a rush and buy from the closest store, chances are you will end up paying more than you should for items from clothing to school supplies. The internet gives you easy access to cheap supplies and all the clothes you need from t-shirts to sweatshirts to trousers.
School expenses can be real budget busters unless you carefully plan a school budget and then actively manage that budget through careful shopping.
