Tiger Woods Promotional Clothing Not a Hot Item

One of the greatest golfers of all time is now divorced from his wife Elin Nordegren. Tiger Woods, the world’s top ranked golfer, was a business unto himself but how the mighty can fall. Worth billions according to estimates, his money was made largely by endorsing sports products and promotional clothing. His name could sell products. Nike gets as much as 10 percent of its golf related sports clothing and equipment sales from selling the Tiger Woods brands.

All that changed 9 months ago when he was involved in a car accident while driving out of his driveway. The accident was shrouded in mystery and the public doesn’t know to this day all the facts of the case. But what they do know is that Woods was a philanderer of epic proportions. Dozens of women appeared in public and talked about their affairs with Woods leading to his eventual divorce from Nordegren.

Interestingly his fans were willing to give him another chance. Sporting polo shirts and printed t-shirts, they showed up at the golf tournaments expecting to see a winning player. They wanted to see him win and recover from his disgrace. But in 2010, Woods has yet to win a single golf tournament, and to say fans who stuck by him through his trials and tribulations are disappointed would be an enormous understatement.

The longer Woods goes without winning, the more his brand name clothing and sports equipment sales drop. Nike sold the Woods brand because Woods was a powerhouse winning golfer who conveyed an image of power. Now he is looking like a weak performer on the golf course and that is causing a problem for Nike. Woods will have to win in the next season or you can bet that Nike will end their contractual relationship with the golf star. Some people believe that Woods will return and just needs to get his mojo back. This has been a distracting and emotional year that has clearly affected his golf game. Some fans believe he will come through again after this winter. Others doubt he can return to his star status because once you lose the power or timing or burning desire, it is gone forever.
