Dos and Don’ts for Embroidery Designs

by Oscar at Clothes2order

In this post, we will explore the main issues and internal escalations that arise when a customer places an order for an embroidered design here at Clothes2order. Embroidery uses thread, not ink, which introduces certain limitations regarding small details, gradients, design size, and garment size. Let’s explore what you should do and what you shouldn’t when considering placing an order with us.

Small Details

Do: Keep designs bold and simple. Embroidery shows best with clear, crisp lines.

Don’t: Include a lot of small details like tiny text, shading, or thin outlines. These elements will need to be simplified for embroidery but don’t worry as our artwork department can assist with this, and you will always receive a proof before production starts.

Gradients

Do: Use solid colors in your designs. The Madeira Thread collection we use consists of solid colors.

Don’t: Expect gradients to be replicated in embroidery. Threads placed next to each other do not create a gradient effect. Submit designs without gradients, or allow us to simplify them into solid block colors.

Size of the Design

Do: Ensure text and design elements are large enough to be legible. The minimum width for letters is 0.8mm and the height is 5mm.

Don’t: Use text or details smaller than these dimensions, as they will not be readable. We recommend giving enough room for the design to be clear. If there are issues, we will resize it for you and send you an email with the guidelines we would need to follow.

Size of the Garment

Do: Consider the garment’s limitations. For example, caps and hats typically have a height limit of 4-6cm for embroidery.

Don’t: Submit very tall designs for garments with size restrictions. Our artwork team will need to significantly reduce such designs to fit, and a proof will be sent for approval.

By following these dos and don’ts, you can ensure your embroidered designs look their best. Understanding the limitations and possibilities of embroidery will help you create designs that are both beautiful and practical.
